PENFIELD, N.Y. — Authorities say a 54-year-old man found dead inside his suburban Rochester home was a victim of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Monroe County sheriff's deputies say Stephen Makowiecki's 18-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter found him unresponsive inside the family home in Penfield around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday. Deputies say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say the teenagers also had elevated carbon monoxide levels in their blood. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports that the teens were in satisfactory condition Wednesday morning.

Authorities say a gas fuel boiler in the residence was producing high levels of carbon monoxide.

Deputies say the teens told authorities that two carbon monoxide detectors had sounded Monday evening, but the family wasn't clear why the devices were sounding and removed them from the house.
