Family hospitalized after carbon monoxide leak

A family of four, including a newborn, was hospitalized late Monday after their carbon monoxide meter detected high levels of the noxious gas in their North Side apartment.

Deborah Foster, a spokeswoman with the San Antonio Fire Department, said the family's new monitor alerted them to the carbon monoxide around 11:30 p.m. Monday. The gas had wafted into several other units in the La Fiesta apartments, in the 6900 block of North Vandiver Road, Foster said.
Firefighters evacuated the apartment of origin, she said, and the four people were hospitalized as a precaution.

Officials determined a faulty vent on a water heater caused the leak. Several apartments were ventilated, Foster said, and the apartment where the leak was first detected remains evacuated until the water heater can be fixed.

Foster said the family's meter likely saved their lives.
