2 Bronx Girls Collapse in Idling Car

Published: January 27, 2011

Two Bronx girls collapsed from carbon monoxide poisoning on Thursday when their mother left them in the back of an idling car while she shoveled snow to get out of a parking space, the police said. The girls, whose names were not released, had been in a car in front of 31 West Tremont Avenue for about 20 minutes when their mother saw what had happened, the police said.

A neighbor called 911. The snow had blocked the car’s tailpipe, the police said. The girls, ages 4 and 7, were unconscious when rescue workers arrived within two minutes, the Fire Department said. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on the girls.

They were awake on Thursday afternoon, the police said, and in fair condition at Jacobi Medical Center on Thursday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
