CereScan’s Expertise Utilized In $28.5 Million Car

Dr. Gregory Hipskind of CereScan, along with other experts, provided testimony surrounding brain injuries resulting from carbon monoxide poisoning.

This remarkable award highlights a trend in carbon monoxide cases over the past several years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that carbon monoxide poisoning is a leading cause of unintentional poisoning deaths in the United States and is responsible for approximately 15,000 emergency department visits and nearly 500 deaths a year.(2) CereScan and Dr. Hipskind have assisted in providing the objective, scientific evidence of an injury in similar carbon monoxide cases, which yielded positive outcomes, including awards of $2.54 Million in Colorado, $6.8 Million in Montana and $25 Million in Oklahoma.

CereScan has seen a similar trend in traumatic brain injury cases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are approximately 1.7 million mild traumatic brain injuries reported each year, 20% of which lead to persistent, chronic symptoms, leaving 360,000 new chronic mTBI patients each year.(3) In Colorado, CereScan has had a key role in helping to prove the existence of a mild traumatic brain injury resulting in favorable results, including awards of $2.4 Million, $3.1 Million, $4.0 Million and $8.0 Million. Similar success was seen in Montana with an award of $5.8 Million.

While individual awards vary from case to case and state to state, CereScan’s ability to make visible an otherwise invisible brain injury adds significant strength to a case and provides patients with unmatched medical diagnostic information to assist in the guidance of their treatment. CereScan’s state of the art imaging is able to identify, not only the location of a brain injury, but can also demonstrate the extent of the injury through quantifiable measurements that can be correlated with other clinical evaluations.

The Brain Forensics division of CereScan is widely considered a national leader in providing objective scientific evidence on the presence and extent to which a person’s brain has been injured. Our unmatched success rate from cases in over 40 states, has led to a number of requests for Dr. Hipskind to present on traumatic brain injury, carbon monoxide exposure, and a number of related topics. With over 15 years of experience with brain injuries and over 4,000 brain SPECT scan interpretations, CereScan’s team provides unparalleled expertise and support not found at other brain imaging facilities.
